Jobs in and around the garden throughout the year
Spring
March - May
As the soil begins to warm up your garden will now start coming back to life.
Get those last minute maintenance jobs done to ready your garden for summer, clear paths and paving, clean & oil decking if you haven't already, stain fence panels.
Think about how you want your garden to look in summer, choose bedding plants but don't be hasty with your planting, remember if you plant too early the late frost may affect them.
If you haven’t already then try setting up a compost area in your garden. This could simply be a ready-made compost bin or you could build a compost bin yourself using spare bits of wood. Not only will you have somewhere to put your garden waste but your plants will benefit from the rich compost created when it all breaks down.
Summer
June - August
Your garden is now in full bloom and at it's most vibrant and with the care you have taken during the quieter months will hopefully mean that you have the time to enjoy it!
Keep lawns healthy by treating them with a good feed and weeder. Do not be tempted to cut your lawn too short, longer grass is much healthier, although it may need cutting more frequenty your lawn will look more vibrant for the effort that you put in.
If you are wanting to reshape your garden now would be a great time to seed a lawn as the warm soil allows the seed to germinate quickly.
Dont do everything all at once, your summer garden should be enjoyed so try to give yourself weekly jobs to tend to.
Autumn
September - November
The vibrant colours of summer are fading but don’t be fooled into thinking that there is no work to do until next spring. Autumn is a busy time in the garden, clearing away the decaying vegetation of the summer and preparing the garden for the cold winter months ahead.
Autumn provides an ideal opportunity to move poorly placed plants, remember to dig as much as the root ball as possible and plant to the same soil level that they were in previously, the soil will still be warm enough for them to establish.
If your lawn looks slightly worse for wear then autumn is the perfect time to revitalise it. Remove thatch (old grass clippings) and moss and add it to the compost heap..If you have large amounts of moss then you may want to use a moss killer first. In areas that receive a lot of wear the soil can become compacted. Improve drainage and aeration by making deep holes. Autumn is a great time to lay new turf too, giving it plenty of time to establish before next summer.
Evergreens form the backbone of the garden, providing structure and year round interest, so the more evergreens in your garden, the better it will look in winter! With warm soil and cooler conditions, autumn is the perfect time to fill those gaps in your borders.
Winter
December - February
Winter is normally a quiet time in the garden but it won't be long before spring arrives and you’ll be busy nurturing your garden as it comes to life! Maintaining your garden throughout the quieter seasons will save time later when the warm weather arrives.
Have a general tidy up and remove leaves and other debris from your flower borders and lawns, fix any broken fence panels, clear away any seasonal plants that have died during the bad months.
Clean and oil your decking if you haven’t done this already, if you do this now it will be one less job to do when you want to be enjoying your garden.
Wash your greenhouse before spring arrives, it wont be long until it is in full use! Sweep the floor and benches and disinfect with a hot solution of garden disinfectant. Make sure you disinfect the inside of the glass too. Ventilate your greenhouse well until it dries thoroughly.
